    To collect the testimonies of simple everyday heroes to show them that they have value, build concrete solutions with local organisations and inspire people around the world to make sense and encourage them to help from the heart with meaning.

  • Aleppo every day heroes

    Aleppo Watchers. If you look at foreign media, we show you the ruins, Daesh black flags floating in all the streets, collapsed buildings, missiles illuminating the sky ... death, but we do not show you hundreds of thousands of people for whom life continues here despite the war with courage, tens of thousands of children who go to school every day, hundreds of shops still open ... no. It will be about life. Most of them lost everything and are forgotten but they reinvent their life everyday, learn and try despite if the war. We need to understand the reality of the war, learn from them. You can read the stories every week online on my profile or on the profile of the association.

    "We live in Midane, but there are too many attacks here, we're weary. You call your friend, they tell you he's dead, you call a friend, he's lost a body part, you call a friend and he's under a pile of rubbles, people around us leave so suddendly, I think it's the hardest part. You know here, when somebody dies, they displau papers to the walls with a picture, the name of the family, the time of the funerals. You know, there was a real water shortage, we had a friend who was bringing us water for a hundred pounds for seven gallons, he was really helping us, not only was it cheap, but so we didn't have to run in front of the snipers... he was on its way to bring us water and a gas bottle fell on him. I was at the school in Azizé, the kids where in Midane, they were waiting for the bus and a bottle of gas fell next to the bus, people got my kids into cellar to wait for me until I come back. On the day after, I couldn't send them to school, they were pucking because of the fear. One day, the building in front of us collapsed, we couldn't do anything, they were carrying the bits of the families that had stayed inside, no one survived. I'm afraid of living in this house since a shell blew up the opposite building, it could have been us. I know, what I'm telling you is horrifying, but it's the truth, it's our daily life and we have to live, no matter what happends. During one year, we didn't let our kids get out of the house because of the snipers and the mortars, they often shoot on children. And then, little by little, it became more common. All we want is peace, it's our country but this war isn't our, we just are the victims of this war, I hope we'll make it out alive. My children are fighting for us, they are tops of their class and they'll do anything to make us proud, give us hope when we lose it, our children are our guardian angels. We couldn't do what we wanted with our lives, so we'll do anything so that our kids can, our kids are the reason we keep on living. Thanks for what you do being here, God bless you, God bless us."
    "We have been displaced from Cheikh Maksoud with my family because of the bombings and Al Nosra. We are living in a building carcass. We left our house because everything was very hard, one day a big mortar fell into the school where I was, I was very scared and we ran, and other mortars fell ... we ran to hide in the cellar of the school. Then a tank started shooting, the blows of the cannon were so strong and we were afraid that the cave might collapse on us. That was 4 years ago, I was 4 years old."
    « Avec la guerre on a dû se déplacer. Ma maman ne veut pas que je demande de l’argent dans la rue, elle ne veut pas que je travaille non plus … mais elle n’a pas le choix, je dois travailler. J’ai 11 ans. Avant la guerre nous étions juste des enfants mais maintenant nous sommes comme des adultes. Du coup je vends des bonbons, des roses ou des ronds de tissus pour que les gens puissent réparer ou accrocher des choses. » We are superheroes C'est bête comme bonjour mais ça a souvent fait toute la différence. Dans pas mal de pays j'aidais des vendeurs ambulants ou beggars, que ce soit des enfants ou des adultes, qu'ils sachent lire-écrire ou non, en écrivant ou faisant écrire un panneau qui raconte, illustre et donne du sens à ce qu'ils font ou vendent pour pousser les gens à s'arrêter, à lire, à comprendre et à les aider avec une relation plus humaine.

    "Quand j’avais 4 ans mon père m’envoyait récolter du plastique dans la rue. J’étais dans un jardin, je sautais dans le sac pour tasser le plastique quand les bombes ont commencé à tomber, je me suis mis à courir, je trainais mon sac de plastique que j’avais récupéré, je ne voulais pas le laisser. J’avais vraiment très peur, ça arrive souvent mais j’ai eu très peur ce jour-là."

    "All my friends left the country, I'm all alone. We were 21 in the class, and now we're 10. I'm not afraid. My dream is to keep on studying and to succeed in life, to be the best. I want to become a journalist, discover things and share what I learn. Him, he's my best friend, I sleep next to him and it gives me courage. I hide him and take him with me at night, when mortars and shell fall from the skies, and I feel less lonely, and I know everything's gonna be ok."

    "I live here in Aleppo, before with my family, then in the street and now with this woman who keeps me Ashrafié with her. She never forced me to go to the streets and ask people for money, I ask money myself and I give it to her. In exchange I have a bed, a roof and some food. I sleep beside her or next to her mother because they want me to be like their child. It's difficult to survive in the street, people insult you, don't respect you. I give all my money to this woman because they have nothing, they're too poor and her husband died. Before she was living in a garden, a garden that I knew before, I met her there. Me and my parents we used to go in Tawhid garden. One day my parents let me play with another child in the garden and they told me "when you're done, come back." when I finished, I went to my parents' house, I knocked on the door, knocked and knocked but no one answered. I went to another floor to ask neighbors and they told me that my parents were ok, a mortar fell not far, but everybody were fine, that I should not worry ... it was the Sallom hospital, the mortar fell on the side of the hospital. My mom and my sister died there, it's been a year and a half or so. I didn't see them die but I saw their bodies, I hope that they're with god. "
    "War is scaring me but I know we don’t have the choice. I’m the one going to buy thing to fill my daddy shop but I want to keep studying, I don’t want to work now, I don’t want to get married, I want to learn. I only leave school to help my dad. I live in the tent with him and in the mosque at night, people are hard with us… I don’t want to forget my house, it’s hard to live like this, I dream about finding a new house someday, some place we can call home, where we can be happy as a family, and safe."

    "You can't imagine what is happens here. When everything started, I was afraid to leave my house, I had this constant feeling of losing my country. No one can imagine, your generation didn't experience the war. You're part of the war, but here in Syria, we feel lost. I back went to Maaloula and saw my house. They took everything, it is all destroyed. I can't rebuild it for the moment. They did not only destroy my house, they stole my memories, my childhood, my life. I'll tell you something, can you imagine how people escaped from Maaloula when it started? What it means for a lady of 75yo to run barefoot? You know, there are men who died from fear and stress when they arrived in Damascus. They did not bear what had happened in Maaloula. During this crisis, Syrians tried to show strength even when they were afraid. I have a friend who offered me his house in his country so I could run away, but I refused. I always refuse. I replied that I would rather die on the pavement in Damascus than being a refugee in a foreign country. My father taught me that our house is our country. If we leave our house that it means we leave our country. Unfortunately for many many families, they have lost everything and have no other choice but to leave or be displaced."

    "We moved from Miasar, eastern from Aleppo, the city has been taken by Al Nosra. We've left two and a half year ago now, we were the last ones to leave the block. It was our house, we had just finished paying it. Little by little, the city was emptied and the bombs were falling, we were too scared. A three-bedroom house with a living room, the kids liked to play on the balcony, and we've abandonned it. I know everything that was inside has been stolen shortly after we left, and now it's probably been destroyed. We've left with two blankets and the clothes we had on us, that's all. We were moved to that room. When the first mortar fell here a couple of years ago, my son got injured. Mortars always come in groupe, always two or three, but he ran to see what happened. That little demon told his teacher I sent him on the street to buy some groceries, luckily h's still alive. We live in 14 square meters since those last few years. We're eight – six of us are children. We suffocate but we thank god for being still alive. I was offered to go live in some place bigger, but it's the shell of a building, they are no walls, no toilets, no water, we can't. My husband can't work, he's almost blind, so to make a living I gather some clothes a merchant gives me for free, I sell what I can and I get a small percentage of the sales. I've told all the neighbors I had some clothes, and those who want to help us sometimes buy some. I don't do some bookkeeping, everything I own I spend, but I make a bit less than 5000 pounds a month (10€), every two weeks I try to buy a bit of chicken. We didn't have this life before, we worked all of our lives to build what we've lost, but we stay positive, the war will stop and we'll be stronger, we'll build it again. We'll get through this."

    "I'm not scared of terrorists, neither of the bombings, I don't want to be scared, I just want to live ... but i'm sad I've left my home I loved, my bedroom I loved. I really like my school, I'm in a UNICEF center, I have a lot of friends. I want to become a doctor to save people from the war, I think it's the most beautiful job on earth."

    "I have been displaced three times, and what people just don’t get is that we are Syrians as everyone here, we’ve just been deprived of our lives. My wife and my daughters sleep at the mosque and I sleep under this tent against the mosque, I have to maintain my store. Before I had a company, employees, eight machines, we worked with stone. As I came to work in Aleppo, the “free army” as they used to be called before, deduced that I was pro-regime and they burned my house, stole my machines and they shot me in the leg. I lost everything and I can’t even afford a rent now. I set up this tent and I have this small stall to survive with my wife and four children… It is so hard… You work your whole life to build something and suddenly overnight, you have nothing. I wanted to cling to life, I moved my family in another area of the city and I managed to rent a machine to keep working but they came back, they gained ground and we had to flee again, and again. I had an open-heart surgery a few years ago, I’m in poor health but I still try to do my best, I cannot carry anything, collecting water is too hard because it’s impossible for me to carry the water container so it’s my wife and my son who take care of that; even if I don’t want my son to work I have no choice but to ask him to help me. I think about my daughters, I have three daughters and I believe I was less afraid when my house burnt than today to protect my daughters, I’m scared for them. My dream would be to find a new house, a place for us, and even if I thank God for this little job I have, I would like to find something else; I worked hard before with my company. My little boy will always be able to hold its own, but I’m scared for my daughters. I ensure that my four children study whatever happens to be, I’ll give my life if I have to."
